In 1876, Sadhguru SriBrahma was born as Kaliappan in Naduvapatty, Ramnad District, into a poor agricultural family.
History and Tradition of 145 Years
According to Sadhguru Sri Brahma, the one who has the mastery to take over many bodies and operate them according to his will is called a siddha.A person with spiritual discipline and a sense of duty would efficiently serve society.
The ideal form of virakata, i.e., a person who has detached himself from all temptations and expectations of the world, is someone who, whilst being detached and selfless, constantly strives for the welfare and betterment of society while following his spiritual order. One night, as Sadhguru Shri Brahma fell asleep, he intuitively heard a voice calling him, “Come, come.” This was the moment he knew he should take sanyas and walk the spiritual path.
He did sadhana with great intensity and, at some point, decided to meditate in a pit underground for a period of 10 days. He started this process in his native village. But within a few days, his sadhana was abruptly disrupted when residents pulled him out of the ground, fearing that he might die and that they would be made responsible for it.
So he set off wandering in search of a conducive place to complete the process. When he came to the village of Subbulapuram, the residents invited him to stay and provided him with a meal per day and shelter (adjacent to the then-only Lord Vinayaka Temple).
Recognizing their trust and devotion, Sadhguru Sri Brahma revealed his intention of doing sadhana underground. The villagers immediately agreed to set up the place and create the necessary conditions. As per his instructions, they dug a pit of 10–12 feet deep and placed a wooden plate on its bottom. The wooden plate, covered with tharpai, a unique grass used for rituals, served as his asan, or seat.
He sat down on it in padmasana, and the pit was closed with another wooden plate covered with sand. For 10 days, the villagers diligently guarded the place and ensured not the slightest sound or sudden movement would disturb his penance.
On the 11th day, as previously instructed by Sadhguru Sri Brahma, they uncovered the pit and took him out, applied the essence of a particular leaf to his body, and poured over 1000 buckets of water on him for resuscitation. He stayed on for some time, and it goes to say that out of his compassion, he performed many miracles for the local villagers.
When it was time to depart, he blessed the village and said that every year, from the day after amavasya in the month of July, for three days, they should perform Guru Pooja and offer annadhanam (free food) to all the sadhus who would come to Subbulapuram.
Sadhguru Sri Brahma told them to treat each sadhu as they would treat him. In those days, the village was very poor. There were neither high-yield crops nor an irrigation system; only small farmers with lusty hearts were ready to abide by their Guru’s will. Sadhguru Sri Brahma said to them, “Just do this; everything will come to you.” And so it happened. The village grew and is now enjoying not only fertile land with rich crops but has also become a vibrant place to live.
Sadhguru performed Jalasamadhi in Brahma Teertham Temple Pond in Palani. People reported this to this collector, and they brought him out, who was still alive. From there, he went to E.Vellanur for reasons unknown, which is a discreet place, where there is Sadhguru’s Ashram today.”
He went on Samadhi again, and some anti-religious people went to the collector to complain that he was buried by some men after extorting money from him. People whom he kept to guard went on to remove him on the 7th day evening after numerous pots of water and herbs. On the next day, he opened his eyes, which was a coincidence, when the collector came in front of him and was blinded.
He wrote and asked why he was disturbed, and they went to explain the reason. Sadhguru advised that in return for this, he instructed the village people to perform Annadanam for 12,000 people, and he restored the collector’s eye sight.
1915, after the Guru Pooja in E.Vellanur, Swami came to Thiruvanaikovil Chinnayai’s grove.
He stayed in Tirchy long enough for people to come and sit in his presence, and his family came to know about his whereabouts, where he advised them not to see him again. He is for people. Social untouchability was at its peak. Sadhguru broke this tradition and made people walk on the streets while also making them enter the main temple. It was such a controversial event that attracted newspapers, which attracted people like Periyar, who was a revolutionist.
Sadhguru told Periyar that legal and constitutional changes cannot be brought about through spirituality.
The caste and religion have to go, and education must be available to all. He said to Periyar that he will be an influential leader and that he will make sure his name is in history even when he is not there.
A British collector who knew about Sadhguru ordered the railway track to be laid, deviating away from the path where Sadhguru was meditating in Samadhi. There is a place called ThiruKandhal Dakshina Murthy Mutt in Ooty where he performed Kanda Yoga, where he could spill his body parts for a certain type of Sadhana.
Sadhguru was opposed by religious fundamentalists because he broke caste systems and untouchability. He ended up creating animosity with groups that did not comply with his actions. This made it difficult for him to do anything effectively in society; besides, he was also initiating women into the mediation process, which was not accepted in times of inequality.
In his life span, Sadhguru Shri Brahma established 70 powerful ashrams in the southern part of India. Looking back at Sadhguru’s reasons to visit so many places and infusing them with such energy tends to point to one cause alone. He was in the process of creating or identifying a form that all of his disciples and followers could use and benefit from long after his departure.
However, when Sadhguru is unable to fulfill his vision, he decides to return in his next lifetime. He decides to head for Velliangiri Hills, knowing that his guru, PalaniVel Swami, has been there. He left his body through all his seven chakras without leaving a single trace of his body. Before climbing the Velliangiri, he told his disciples, “This one will be back.”
From Sadhguru: Sadhguru Sri Brahma was not a nice guy. He never called anyone by name; he only said, “Eh!” “Eh” was the one name for everyone. People were terrified of him just because of the way he was. But at the same time, they loved him immensely. That is the beauty of contradictions. Sadhguru Sri Brahma was like fire—simply on. They did not love him because he was nice to them. They loved him because they could not help it. Thousands were drawn to him. He set up 70 institutions in Tamil Nadu within a short span of time.
He mostly traveled around and spent very little time in one place. But wherever he went, people gave him land and things so he could set up institutions. They did this because they could not help loving him, not because he was nice to them. The energy at the Seventh Hill is very different because Sadhguru Sri Brahma left his body there. His whole focus in life had been to consecrate the Dhyanalinga. But in spite of all his inner capabilities, a lack of social skills destroyed the project. Society turned against him and made sure he could not do it.
When this happened, he wanted to check why this project failed and if something was wrong with his energy system. So, to do this, he left the body through all the seven chakras. This applies to everyone. If something in your life does not work, the first thing is to check yourself to see if there is something wrong with you. The problem with most human beings is that if something does not work, the first thing they do is blame someone else.
You should first look at yourself. Pay absolute attention to every aspect of your life and see why this has not happened in a successful manner. Something may not be okay with you. Only after checking this and being sure that everything is okay with you can you see if there is some other factor that is messing it up. Sadhguru Sri Brahma was immensely empowered and lived almost miraculously. You may have heard of some of the things that he did, like walking through a locked prison door or making a boy walk on a lake.
Things like that happened around him on a daily basis. People saw him as godlike, but they were terrified of him because he seemed to always be angry. He was not angry with anyone; he was simply ferociously intense. Sadhguru Sri Brahma was like fire—simply on. When people gathered around him just before he went up the Seventh Hill for the last time, he said, “This one will come back again.” One who leaves his body through all seven chakras is referred to as Chakreshwara.
That means he has complete mastery over his energy system. Even today, about seventy years later, the energy there is alive and on, like it happened yesterday. The energy is so crazily intense that it just blows you away. This Velliangiri Mountain is one of the rarest places on the planet; you will not experience that kind of energy anywhere else.
This time around, our social competence has improved. I consciously civilized myself to the extent that is necessary to function in society. Today, we have social skills, which we lacked then. Because of the intensity of energy that he carried, other things did not seem important to him.
He thought that what people in society think does not matter. But do not underestimate the power of ignorance. There is power in knowledge, but there is tremendous power in ignorance. Many things in the world do not move forward because of people’s ignorance. No matter how hard you try, ignorance is like an anchor—it will not let even the biggest ship move.
This time around, I took care of the ignorant from the beginning, treating ignorance with respect. He treated ignorance with disdain. If someone said something stupid, he just kicked them. He did not understand the democratic process. The majority is always ignorant, and they have the power.
He ignored that because he thought that with this intensity of energy, everything would happen. And when it did not work, he tried to check to see if his energy was not good enough. So he left his body through all the seven chakras, which is a very rare phenomenon. This Velliangiri Mountain is one of the rarest places on the planet; you will not experience that kind of energy anywhere else.
